Implementation of Gender mainstreaming in high schoo

Event Details

The team proposes to conduct awareness sensitization meetings in high school in different selected schools to address elimination of gender disparity in high school and promote gender equality in education with a focus on ensuring girls full and equal access and participation in science subjects. The different stake holders will visit the selected high schools and meet with the school heads and the students to share knowledge and provide the key massages which will guide students and the teachers on the importance of gender main streaming in high school. Visitation will be conducted in the ten selected schools in Kampala to emphasize the need to reinforce the participation of both Girls and Boys. The interventions on Gender mainstreaming in high schools shall promote the provision of significant educational input the form of gender awareness training, geared towards changing established perception that science subjects are for boys.

The composition of the team will include 4 gender specialists, 1 data collector and 3 project staff making a team of 8. The team will go to schools and interact with Headteacher, teachers and students in separate groups. The team will as well administer pilot study tool. The team will spend approx 3 hrs in each school. The team will form themselves into separate groups to handle different categories of the groups.

Goals

The goal is to establish the level of awareness of gender issues and concerns within the Schools; Generate gender responsive awareness in the schools; Repackage information to enhance availability of gender mainstreaming in high school and urge female students to take sciences.

Purpose

The Visits in the schools will continue to strengthen joint monitoring with the stake holders on a basis using gender main streaming refined monitoring tools for students with a focus on the number, education performance status of female students, including attendance, performance and social issues affecting female students in high schools. It is designed to help students understand gender roles and expectations that are learned in our society. This is a useful introductory activity on gender roles as related to career and class choices. Increase the awareness of the active role which women can and do play in MAPRONANO activities and increase female students uptake of science subjects.

 

 

Objective/aims

  • realise how teaching contents, education materials and modes of conduct of all school partners can reproduce and fix gender-role stereotypes;

  • reflect on one’s own conduct, on classroom interaction, on everyday dealing on one’s own sex-role concepts and how it affects female performance in science subjects.

  • raise awareness of daily forms of violence and sexism at school and how it affects one’s ability to perform in class.

  • Raise awareness on uptake of science subjects and how beneficial to females.

  • Look into attitudes, perception and expectations of female students towards science subjects in high school.

  • encourage to eliminate sex-specific prejudices and discrimination, encourage self-confidence, to compensate deficits, to promote attitudes towards science subjects.

  • To examine the effects of gender role stereotyping on career choices for both males and females.

  • To provide encouragement to those students who are contemplating or have chosen science subjects/courses or careers.

 

PROCEDURE:

  1. Divide students into small groups no larger than 6 students. Groups can be gender same or mixed groups.

  2. Convene a meeting involving both teachers and students and each gives his/her opinion and expectations.

  3. Ask students to discuss their feelings and opinions about the uptake of science subjects or career.

Expected Outputs from engaged activities

  • The desired outcome from this activity will be, the discovery and discussion of persistent gender stereotyping, with its wage and status implications, in terms of career opportunities.

  • The High School visits will provide Knowledge to school administrators, teachers and students on the focus of gender mainstreaming in high school.

  • Increased number of female students taking science subjects in high school

  • Survey report on the current status of female students taking science subjects, attitudes and expectations towards science courses in the universities.
